8 glasses of water myth
Today I am going to discuss about drinking water.
8 Glasses of water. So what’s the secret behind drinking water? Well it’s kind of obvious, we’ll die if we don’t… but what about the number 8? how did the humanity comes to 8 glass conclusion.
Now if you are drinking less, of course you’ll be sluggish, have low stamina, lose hair (yes you do on de-hydrated body) … but if you are drinking more, you can over do it and have its own set of consequences on your body.
To me its kind of disturbing suggesting everyone to drink 8 glasses of water. There are way too many factors to be worried about…
- Is the number still good if you are living in India (very hot place) or someone in canada (very cold?).
- What about your physical activity?
- What about your body size?
- What about gender?
Like I said, there are so many factors about this formula. For example, how in the world you can prescribe a 5 feet, 120 pounds female and 6,2 200+ pounds male to drink same number of glasses during the day? Heck I have seen doctors giving out this advice…
Its like giving everyone aspirin no matter what their illness is…
Another dangerous advice related to water : is to drink 8 glasses in the morning and you are golden for the day :D. What kind of non-nonsensical advice is this? Now granted it’s better than not having a good drinking habit at all…
So What to do?
Here are few things I do and teach others to follow. First of all, keep water with you always… I have a 1 ltr bottle on my computer desk all day.
You should get into habit of drinking regularly. To start with keep a bottle with you. Drink whenever you feel thirsty. Slowly adapt to more frequent drinking schedule. Every 30-40 minutes I drink few sips(about 1/2 glass). I don’t like to drink during meals or immediately after meals. Of course in summer, I tend to drink more water. Here are tips laid out for you…
- Start with carrying a mineral water bottle with you and drink whenever you feel thirsty and build on to more frequent drinking (this will help you avoid bathroom breaks)
- Drink few sips every 30-40 minutes.
- Drink more water on Hot days.
- Drink water before/during/after your exercise.
- Add sea salt (a pinch) to glass of water for a day ( Now you don’t have to worry about electrolyte supplements).
I bet you’ll find your digestion, energy levels improving in just few days…
