Thoughts on Core Training

If you want ripped abs, you better read this article completely.

Its really surprising for me to see people claiming (and doing) hundreds of sit ups a day and still have problems with the abs. Let’s not forget most of them are cheating on sit up form. If you are doing sit up properly, 100’s of reps are almost impossible.

I really used to hate doing situps, in-fact I had problems counting the reps after 10 and often used to get bored at around 20 reps. If you lucky one(flipped through few worthless magazines), you’d add few hanging leg raises to your workout.

After doing lots of research on ab training and understanding the science behind building body. I stopped doing crunches and limited my sit-ups completely. And if you know, I have stopped treating body in parts. I think of body as a whole unit and train like it as a whole unit.

Old timers Knew right…

If you read through old manuals, you’ll notice most of the golden era bodybuilders followed this philosophy. They treated their body as a whole.

Core Training as a Whole

Deadlifts, Squats and their variations are the bread and butter of core training. These olympic lifts not only make you stronger as a whole but they’ll effect your middle section. You can get all the trunk strength using these exercises.

Don’t get brainwashed by TV, informercials with 5 second ab roller or swinger. I have all of those gadgets… trust me none of those works.

When you’ll start lifting heavy with these 2 exercises, you’ll see difference in your core right away.

Note : There are tons of lifters who says squats are bad for knees or lifting is bad for back or shoulder or whatever… They are just screwing with your mind.  These guys never learnt the proper form. No wonder they are hurting their body.

Treat your body as a temple or church or mosque or whatever your praying place is. If you don’t take care of your body, your body will not take care of you. I’ve read about people who died by heart attack while having sex. Interesting isn’t it.

Turkish Get up with Kettle Bells

This is another great core training exercise, that’ll teach you the whole body movement (of course including your core). Lie on your back holding a dumbbell, kettlebell, barbell, or sandbag. Stand up without unlocking your elbow and keeping the dumbbell in the air above you.

It sounds easy but isn’t, specially when dumbbell or kettlebell is just above your face.

Janda Sit Ups (My Favorite)

This will revolutionalize your core training. If you never done sit ups this way, you’ll be really surprised.

Janda Sit up is resistance sit ups.

In this situp you are pressing your legs downwards like the arrows shows in the pic. Normally you cannot do this by yourself. Either you need a partner who is pulling your legs while you resist. Or you can use Pavelizer (the tool in the pic). He is using 35 lb of resistance in this pic

Lifting Heavy.

Last thing, generally you’ll notice when you are lifting heavy, your core will get activated. Your core will tighten to give strength to your back and to balance your whole body movement (try farmer walk with heavy weights in both hands).

These are one of the best ab exercises you can do. They are better than 100s of situps or crunches or any space gadget you can find.
